Chapter Summary
- Food Variety: There is a great variety in the food we eat. Different people eat different types of food.
- Ingredients: Each food item is made up of certain ingredients. For example, cooked rice needs raw rice and water. Vegetable curry needs different vegetables, salt, spices, oil, and water.
- Sources of Food:
- Plants: Plants are the main source of food for humans and many animals. We eat various parts of plants like roots, stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds.
- Animals: Animals provide us with milk, meat, and eggs. For example, cows, goats, and buffaloes give us milk. Hens give us eggs, and goats, chicken, fish provide meat.
- Plant Parts as Food:
- Leaves: Spinach, cabbage, mustard (saag).
- Fruits: Apple, mango, tomato, brinjal.
- Stems: Potato, ginger, sugarcane.
- Roots: Carrot, radish, sweet potato.
- Seeds: Wheat, rice, pulses (dals), mustard seeds (for oil).
- Sprouted Seeds: When certain seeds like moong or chana are soaked in water and allowed to germinate, they produce small white structures called sprouts. These are very nutritious.
- Honey: Honey is made by bees from the nectar (sweet juices) collected from flowers. This nectar is converted into honey and stored in their beehives.
- What Do Animals Eat?: Animals have different food habits. Based on what they eat, they are classified into three main groups:
- Herbivores: Animals that eat only plants or plant products. Examples: Cow, goat, deer, elephant.
- Carnivores: Animals that eat only other animals (meat). Examples: Tiger, lion, wolf.
- Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and animals. Examples: Human beings, dog, bear, crow.
